We can be guilty of falling off the fitness wagon a bit in the summertime. We're busy driving to the beach, reading by the pool, or grilling in the backyard. We're outside, but not always moving as much as we'd like.
But the good news is, you don't have to sacrifice your beach plans to get in a good workout. We have found 4 great fitness options at beaches in the Boston, NYC, Philly, and DC areas that won't make you compromise between spending a weekend at the beach or getting your workout in.
New York City
You don't have to go far to get some beach vibes with your workout. All summer long, the NYC Parks and Recreation Department is putting on FREE yoga on the beach at Rockaway Beach (Beach 108th Street). Just bring your own mat and let the soothing sound of waves crashing nearby get you into your yoga zone. (Bonus- There are also free night time Zumba classes under the stars which sounds really quite wonderful).
The popular Philly spin studio, Body Cycle Studio, is bringing their bikes to Margate one weekend per month this summer for some seaside spinning. The first weekend is coming up on June 10th. You can read the details via Be Well Philly.
Drive up the North Shore to Gloucester for some stand up paddle board yoga put on by Cape Ann SUP. They have a Sunday morning and Wednesday evening class through mid-September at Pavilion Beach. If you haven't done stand up paddle board yoga yet, just trust us, it's awesome.
Speaking of Paddleboard yoga, OC SUP and Fitness in Ocean City, Maryland, offers a variety of standup paddle board options but the one that caught our attention was the Assateague Island exploration where you can quietly paddle along the shoreline of Assateague where wild horses roam free and bald eagles soar overhead.
Those are just a few of our favorites. Nearly every shore town has something going on each weekend from 5Ks to yoga classes that you can drop into. We also highly recommend just putting your shoes on and going for a beach run that ends with a jump in the ocean. We hope you're summer is off to a great start!
